Did ChatGPT Remove UTM Attribution? Yes — Here's What We Know

As of October 15, 2026, ChatGPT is dropping utm_source=chatgpt.com on many outbound links, so those visits land in GA4 as Direct. What changed on October 9, the numbers behind it, and what to do until it's fixed.

Yes — as of October 15, 2026, ChatGPT is dropping UTM parameters on many outbound links, and those visits are landing in Google Analytics as Direct instead of chatgpt.com. If your ChatGPT-referred traffic fell off a cliff after October 9, it's most likely a measurement change, not a real traffic loss.

What exactly changed

Since June 2026, ChatGPT had been appending utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it cites, which made AI referral traffic easy to see in GA4. Around October 9, 2026 — coinciding with the GPT-6 rollout — that tag started disappearing, and a new link-opening behavior ("Intelligent UI") that also suppresses the referrer began rolling out.

The measured shift, per Profound's research:

DateCited answers with tagged linksAnswers using the new link UI
October 8~98%~2%
October 9~75%~26%
October 14~66%~35%

No UTM parameter and no referrer means GA4 has nothing to attribute the session to — so it files the visit under Direct. One publisher measured ChatGPT traffic down ~31,000 visits/day while Direct rose ~26,000/day on the same pages.

Is this permanent?

Unknown. OpenAI has not commented publicly, and some analysts believe it may be a bug rather than a deliberate change. Until there's an official statement or the tagging returns, treat post–October 9 ChatGPT numbers in GA4 as undercounted.

What to do right now

  1. Read ChatGPT and Direct together. If ChatGPT traffic is down and Direct is up after October 9 on the same pages, that's the attribution shift.
  2. Anchor on totals and conversions. Total sessions and conversions on your AI-cited pages are now a better health signal than the chatgpt.com source row.
  3. Don't rewrite strategy on this dip. Your content is still being cited and clicked — the label changed, not the behavior.

One note for Maya users: your AI visibility data in Maya is unaffected. Maya measures your presence inside the AI answers themselves — mentions, citations, share of voice — not via UTM parameters, so the October 9 change doesn't touch those metrics. It's your GA4 source attribution that broke, not your visibility.

When will it be fixed?

We don't know yet — and nobody outside OpenAI does. We're tracking the behavior daily and will update this post the moment tagging returns or OpenAI comments.
