Preferred sources — FAQ
- What are Google preferred sources?
- Preferred sources let readers tell Google which publications they want to see more often. When a user marks your site as a preferred source, your content is more likely to appear in Top Stories and can be highlighted with a 'preferred' badge in Top Stories, AI Mode and AI Overviews.
- Is my site eligible to be a preferred source?
- Only domain-level and subdomain-level sites are eligible (for example example.com or news.example.com, but not example.com/blog). To check, search for your site in Google's source preferences tool at google.com/preferences/source. If it appears there, readers can select it — and the button below will work on your pages.
- How does the 'Add to Preferred Sources' button work?
- The button loads Google's official publisher.js library, which scans your page for an element marked with google-add-preferred-source-btn and renders a Google-styled button in its place. When a reader clicks it, Google adds your site as a preferred source and returns them to where they left off.
- Does the button add my domain or Maya's domain?
- Google infers the site from the page the script runs on. That means the button only adds YOUR domain when the code is installed on YOUR site. The live preview on this page is a visual mock — copy the generated code onto your own pages for it to work.
- What if my CMS can't run JavaScript?
- Use the 'Text link' style. It generates a plain deeplink to Google's source preferences tool (google.com/preferences/source?q=yourdomain) that you can drop into a link, button image, newsletter or social post — no JavaScript required.
- Which languages and themes are supported?
- The button auto-translates to the reader's browser language by default, and you can force a specific language. It also ships in light and dark themes. This generator lets you set both before copying the code.
