Eligibility for ChatGPT ads depends on your industry: areas like e-commerce, SaaS/B2B and mobile apps are generally allowed; healthcare and finance are restricted; and categories like adult content, gambling, alcohol/tobacco, political content, weapons and legal services are prohibited. Eligibility depends on your business's primary activity category and OpenAI's current ad policies. This guide groups industries into three tiers. For the final decision, review the policies and advertising terms; category interpretation can change over time.

Three tiers: allowed, restricted, prohibited

TierMeaningExamples
AllowedGenerally can advertiseE-commerce, SaaS/B2B, mobile apps, education, travel
RestrictedPossible with extra conditions/approvalHealthcare, financial services
ProhibitedCannot advertiseAdult, gambling, alcohol/tobacco, political, weapons, legal services, fraud

1. Generally allowed industries

Businesses that promote a concrete product or service with a clear conversion (purchase, signup, demo) are generally eligible for ChatGPT ads.

  • E-commerce: A product sale is a clear conversion; order value and checkout flow are measurable.
  • SaaS / B2B: Works with a demo-request or signup objective; lead quality should be evaluated with sales.
  • Mobile apps: The in-app main event and measurement provider (e.g., AppsFlyer, Adjust) should be handled together.
  • Education, travel, productivity tools: Eligible with a clear value proposition and a fitting landing page.

To see which ads actually appear in your category, Maya Ads Library presents sponsored ads observed in your project — an indicator of whether your sector advertises in practice (scope is limited to the tracked questions).

2. Restricted industries

Some sectors aren't fully prohibited but are subject to extra conditions or approval.

  • Healthcare: Advertisers whose primary business is healthcare may be ineligible; some cases depend on approval.
  • Financial services: Generally restricted; some approved campaigns may be permitted.

If you're considering ads here, read the policy carefully before building a campaign and be prepared for OpenAI's review process.

3. Prohibited categories

OpenAI does not accept ads in categories such as (ad policies):

  • Adult content and services (including dating apps, sexual health products)
  • Gambling
  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Political content (candidates/parties/elections, public policy, contested social issues)
  • Weapons
  • Recreational drugs
  • Counterfeit goods, scams and fraud
  • Legal advice and services offered to individuals or businesses

OpenAI has also restricted ads for third-party image and audio generation services that directly compete with its own multimodal features. Ads must not contain derogatory, defamatory or exclusionary language based on protected characteristics.

4. If your industry is eligible: the next step

If your sector is in the allowed or restricted-but-possible tier, you can open an account and build your first campaign. Remember ads don't appear in sensitive topics (e.g., mental health, politics) and OpenAI states ads don't influence answer content (Testing ads in ChatGPT).
