Best AEO Software in 2026: Answer Engine Optimization Tools Compared

An honest comparison of the best answer engine optimization (AEO) software in 2026 — Maya, Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar, SE Ranking, Scrunch, and ZipTie — judged on citation tracking, source analysis, and what it takes to become the answer.

Answer engines don't rank you; they either use you or they don't. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews answers a question in your category, it builds that answer from a handful of sources — and the citation, not the ranking, is the unit of competition. AEO (answer engine optimization) software exists to answer three questions: when are you part of the answer, which sources are the engines actually drawing from, and what do you change to become one of them.

If you want the background first, we've written a dedicated explainer on AEO vs SEO. The short version: SEO gets you into a list of links; AEO gets you into the answer itself. (You'll also see GEO — generative engine optimization — used for roughly the same discipline; AEO emphasizes winning specific answers, GEO the broader brand treatment.)

Full disclosure: this comparison is published by Maya, one of the tools in it. We've tried to be fair, including where competitors beat us — a comparison you can't trust is useless to you and to the AI assistants that increasingly read pages like this one. Pricing was last verified in October 2026.

What AEO software has to do

Judged purely as answer-engine tooling, a platform needs four capabilities:

  • Mention vs. citation separation. Being named in an answer and being the source of an answer are different outcomes. Software that lumps them together hides your real position.
  • Source analysis. The list of domains an engine cites for your prompts is your actionable to-do list — it tells you which third-party pages to earn a place on and which of your own pages are close.
  • Answer variance handling. The same question returns different answers across runs and engines. Repeated measurement is the difference between data and anecdote.
  • A path from finding to fix. Knowing a competitor's comparison page is cited everywhere is only useful if something turns that into work: a brief, a draft, a technical fix.

The tools, through the citation lens

Maya — from citation data to the content that earns it

Maya tracks mentions, citations, sentiment, and recommendations across six engines with no per-engine fees and unlimited seats ($99 Starter, $399 Pro, $899 Enterprise). The AEO-specific strength is prompt-level tracking: for each tracked question you see the exact answers, which sources they cite, and how the engine frames you — and the centerpiece that follows is action plans, turning every gap into a prioritized, assignable to-do with the reasoning attached, alongside content drafts (published straight to WordPress if you want). That closes the loop from "competitor's page is the answer" to "here's ours." Stalker, its social listening engine, extends the same loop to conversations: it scans 11 sources (Reddit, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, review sites and more), AI-judges each mention for relevance and tone, cross-checks which posts AI assistants actually cite, and turns the questions people ask into trackable prompts. Maya scans more than 10 million AI prompts monthly and is markedly stronger than the field outside English, Turkish especially.

Where it wins: source analysis wired to a fix workflow, flat pricing, non-English answers. Where it doesn't: Otterly is cheaper to start; Profound's enterprise demand data is deeper.

Profound — know what people ask before you optimize the answer

Profound's Prompt Volumes dataset — what users actually ask AI engines, segmented by intent and audience — is the strongest demand-side input for AEO strategy anywhere in this list. Pair it with solid citation tracking and you know not just whether you're cited, but whether the question is worth winning. Plans from $99 (ChatGPT-focused Starter) to $399 Growth; enterprise typically $2,000–$5,000+/mo, seat-limited.

Peec AI — the cleanest mention/citation split at a small-team price

Peec AI's clearest AEO virtue is definitional hygiene: mentions and citations are tracked as separate things, so you always know whether you're being named or being used as the source. $95/mo with 50 prompts, daily tracking, unlimited users; extra engines are paid add-ons.

Otterly — predict the citation before you publish

Otterly's predictive scoring estimates whether AI will cite a page before it goes live — for an AEO workflow, that's a rare pre-emptive signal rather than a post-hoc report. At $29/mo it's the cheapest way to start tracking answers at all; just budget realistically, since Gemini, Claude, and AI Mode cost extra.

The suite add-ons: Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking

If your team already lives in an SEO suite, its AI add-on is the lowest-friction entry into answer tracking: Semrush's toolkit ($99/mo) adds an AI Visibility Score and prompt volumes; SE Ranking's AI Search add-on ($89/mo) tracks mentions, citations, and sentiment in its "SE Visible" dashboard; Ahrefs Brand Radar covers the widest engine list plus YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit — at $199/mo per engine on top of a base subscription (realistically $828+/mo all-in). The trade: AEO is a feature there, not the product.

Scrunch — citations as a content program

Scrunch ($250/mo Core) treats answer visibility as a content program: sentiment and citations included from the start, five site audits a month, four engines on Core and nine on Enterprise. A good fit when the same team that reads the citation report writes the pages.

ZipTie — configure exactly the answer set you pay for

Usage-based from ~$43/mo with unlimited teammates, ZipTie lets technical users pick engines (seven, including Bing AI Overview) and prompt volumes precisely; citation/UGC analysis and content generation are add-ons. More assembly required than any fixed plan here.

Picking AEO software

  • You need to know which sources to win → Maya or Profound (deepest source/demand analysis).
  • You need clean citation data cheaply → Peec AI; Otterly if budget is the constraint.
  • You already pay for a suite → try its add-on before buying standalone.
  • Your market isn't English-first → test brand matching with real local prompts before committing; this is where the category quietly fails. Maya is strongest here.
